What is heart attack?

Heart attack is also known as acute myocardial infarction, coronary thrombosis, and coronary occlusion. A heart attack is basically a permanent damage in the muscles of the heart. The coronary arteries ensure flow of oxygenated blood for the heart normally. Proteins, fatty matter, calcium etc gets accumulated in the arteries forming plaque and thus causing blockage for the blood. Blood clots form around the plaque, and thereby restrict the oxygenated blood to the heart. The heart muscles weaken within a short time, leading to permanent damage which is referred to as heart attack.

As per studies show, you are at a higher risk of heart attack if you have:

  • Age above 50
  • Family history of heart disease
  • High cholesterol or high blood pressure
  • Unhealthy lifestyle
  • Consumption of alcohol at higher levels routinely
  • Physical inactivity 
  • Emotional stress

Warning signs of heart attack

The heart attack can occur suddenly for some patients. For some others, it may take months to develop the signs and symptoms of heart attack. When you get any of the warning signs, do not hesitate to get medical help as it can help you save life. Here are the warning symptoms of heart attack.
Chest pain or discomfort: Chest pain or discomfort can occur anywhere between the neck and abdomen although it will be at the chest part mostly. Chest pain can be a sharp, dull, tight, squeezing or aching sensation.
Discomfort in the upper part: A discomfort is the upper body part can be a sign of heart attack. It includes a pain or discomfort in one or both the arms, back, shoulders, neck, jaw, upper part of the abdomen, etc. The pain will hardly go below the belly button.
Shortness of breath: A difficulty in breathing is a symptom of heart attack. You will feel you are not getting enough of air to breath. You may also feel tightness in the chest.
Other signs of heart attack include:

  • Unusual fatigue
  • Nausea, light-headedness etc.
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain in the jaw, neck or back
  • Discomfort in the abdomen  

Signs in women

Signs and symptoms of heart attack can vary in men and women. Mostly woman experience excessive sweating, pressure, nausea, jaw pain as warning signs for heart attack. Breaking out in a cold sweat, vomiting, light-headedness, pain in stomach is also observed as signs of heart attack.

Signs in men

For men, chest discomfort, chest pain, and chest pressure is often sign of heart attack. Symptoms can disappear after few minutes or continue for a long time. Immediate medical attention should be sought in order to save life.
