A Simple Explanation

These are the services provided by the Doctors specialized in Interventional Cardiology.

What is Interventional Cardiology?

Interventional Cardiology is a branch of cardiology that deals with treatment of structural heart diseases, using catheters.

The title of the Father of Interventional Cardiology is reserved for Andreas Gruentzig. This was possible due to the development of Angioplasty by Interventional Radiologist, Charles Dotter.

There are a number of procedures done the heart by catheterization. The most common is the insertion of a sheath through either the groin area or the wrist area, and then directing a catheter to the heart using the X-Ray Visualization. The radial artery is usually used for cannulating. The blockages are removed either by using a balloon (Angioplasty) or other procedures.

Advantages of Interventional Cardiology

The advantages that Interventional Cardiology provides when compared to other medical procedures are:

  • Scars as well as pain can be avoided to a large extent
  • Reduce the time required for a full recover after the operation
  • The patient is able to move about in a fewer time
  • Acute Myocardial Infraction is cured by ‘Pin-hole’ surgery, an Interventional cardiology procedure of primary angioplasty.
  • What are the different Interventional Cardiology Services?

The different procedures provided in ICS are:

This is an intervention for the coronary heart disease treatment. It is also called Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI).

The narrow cardiac valves, usually the mitral, aortic or the pulmonary, are dilated using this procedure,

    Congenital Heart Defect Correction

The correction of the atrial septal and ventricular septal defects, closure of a patent ductus arteriosus and angioplasty of the great vessels, are usually done using the Percutaneous Approaches.

    Percutaneous Valve Replacement

This is the replacement of a heart valve using percutaneous methods, as an alternative to open heart surgery. This is performed on the aortic valve, pulmonary valve and the mitral valve.

    Percutaneous Valve Repair

This procedure is another alternative to open heart surgery where percutaneous valve repair, using the MONARC system, is performed on the mitral valve.

    Coronary Thrombectomy

The blood clot or thrombus is removed from the coronary arteries using this procedure
