What is atrial fibrillation?
Arrhythmia is a problem in the rate of heartbeat. Atrial fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia and it is one of the most common types of arrhythmia. Atrial fibrillation is the abnormal heart rhythm characterized by irregular or fast heart beating. It may start occasionally in patients and gradually become longer and constant. The condition may lead to blood clots, stroke, dementia, and other heart-related ailments.
As you know our heart has four chambers; two atria and two ventricles. In atrial fibrillation, the atria quiver due to various reasons resulting in irregular heart beat. The patient may experience heart beat rate between 100 to 175 bpm in such conditions.
Types of atrial fibrillation:
Occassional atrial fibrillation: In this type, the irregularity in the heart beat will come occasionally, stay for some time, and stop on its own.
Persistant: In this type, the atrial fibrillation will not set down on its own. And you may need medication or other types of treatment to bring it to normal.
Persistant for long time: It may last for twelve months and more.
Permanent atrial fibrillation: In such conditions, the heart beat cannot be reinstated to the normal stage.
