A Simple Explanation

A 24 hours Coronary Care Unit (CCU) is a hospital ward specialized to treat patients with heart attacks, unstable angina, cardiac dysrhythmia and other cardiac diseases that require continuous monitoring and treatment.

Coronary Care Unit Equipment

The Coronary Care Unit will have the availability of telemetry or the continuous monitoring of the cardiac rhythm by Electrocardiography, as the main feature.

This is to allow for early intervention with medications, cardioversion or defibrillation, improving the prognosis (the doctor’s opinion of the medical condition).

Another important feature of a 24 Hour CCU will be the twenty-four hours, 7 day a week cardiac catheterization lab for cardiac emergencies such as acute myocardial infarction as well as a comprehensive consultative Electrophysiology service.

They will also have Diagnostic Imaging equipment for advanced cardiac imaging such as cardiac MRI and cardiac CT.

In addition to all this, the CCU will have an intensive care unit procedure room with a fully equipped fluoroscopy suite as well as a dedicated intensive care unit echocardiogram machine.

Who are admitted here?

In the Coronary Care Unit, patients suffering from advanced heart failure are admitted. Patients with Myocardial infarction (heart attack) or unstable anginas (chest discomfort that can lead to heat attacks) are also admitted to the CCU, as the chances of Arrhythmias is common.

In addition, the CCU usually admits patients showing specific indications like atrial fibrillation, while patients with heart block are standard admission
